Small Business Administration (SBA) 2016 8(a) Graduate of the Year
“One way the SBA serves entrepreneurs is by consulting them on opportunities to build their businesses, and our 8(a) program provides a foundation for small business owners to participate in federal contracts and open new doors for growth,” said SBA’s Regional Administrator Marianne Markowitz. “With a mission to be a leading IT service provider, 8(a) graduate and veteran Joey Rivera, and his company Rivera Group, have nearly doubled company sales and grown employment by more than 50 percent in the last two years, all while keeping a focus on serving socially-disadvantaged communities.”

The Distinguished Alumni Award honors outstanding IU Southeast alumni who have made significant contributions to the community and are leaders in their professions. Each year, this award is presented to the recipient at Commencement. The following criteria are considered when selecting a recipient:

The Vision & Leadership Award recognizes game changers who have shown excellence in integrating people, processes and technologies across the entire marketing organization to increase the effectiveness of marketing efforts, improve internal efficiency, and drive marketing return on investment.
Rivera Group, contracting for the United States Army Marketing and Research Group, developed a centralized platform to support recruiting of in-service individuals qualified for specialized and elite military occupational specialties and streamlined operations, saving the Special Operations Recruiting Battalion thousands of man-hours each year and achieving desired levels of efficiency. The organization’s leadership now has the capability to track ROI real time.
2013 Spotlight Award, presented by the Indiana Economic Development Corp.
This award, presented by the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, the Indiana Small Business Development Center and the Edward Lowe Foundation, recognizes past Companies to Watch honorees that have demonstrated continued growth, success and commitment to Indiana since receiving their Companies to Watch award.
Rivera Group, a 2011 Companies to Watch recipient, has released a new software architecture and cyber defense product to offer as part of its service offerings, helping the company land contracts with the U.S. Army. The company has hired 45 new employees and has seen a revenue increase of more than 42 percent since 2012.

2011 Indiana Company to Watch, recognized by the Indiana Economic Development Corp.
Companies to Watch is an awards program that celebrates Indiana’s privately held second-stage companies, typically those businesses that are past the startup phase, are considered to be established, and face issues of growth, not survival. Companies to Watch firms must employ between six and 150 full-time equivalent employees, have between $750,000 and $100 million in annual revenue or working capital in place, and demonstrate the intent and capacity to grow based on employee or sales growth, exceptional entrepreneurial leadership, sustainable competitive advantage or other notable strengths.

Our Leadership Team
Dr. Joey Rivera | CEO
Joey has more than 25 years of experience providing dynamic leadership within the software engineering domain. As well as founding Rivera Group, he has spent over 32 years in the military, where his service spans his enlistment as a Private in the U.S. Marine Corps to Army Reserve Lieutenant Colonel, where Joey is currently assigned to the U.S. Cyber Command, providing expertise in cyber warfare. He serves on the Board of Directors for One Southern Indiana and the IN/KY Paralyzed Veterans of America. Joey’s passion for improving life in Southern Indiana extends to his support of the Greater Clark County School’s alternative approach to education via the Ford Next Generation Learning Framework. He holds a Ph.D. in Software Engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. In addition to serving as President and CEO, Joey also leads Rivera Group’s R&D team.
Don Pollard | Chief Financial Officer
Don has more than 25 years of experience leading Finance organizations and setting financial strategy for companies of various sizes, including large corporate organizations. Throughout his career, Don has held CFO and other senior finance roles with firms from diverse industries including retail, manufacturing and technology. Most recently, Don served as SVP of Finance / CFO for Ceridian Stored Value Solutions. He earned a B.S. in Accounting from Western Kentucky University and manages all aspects of Rivera Group’s Finance organization.
David Thompson | Sr. VP, Operations
David has more than 30 years of leadership and operations experience in the U.S. Army, the private sector and state government. He joined Rivera Group after serving in the Office of the Governor of Kentucky as the Executive Director of Kentucky’s Commission on Military Affairs. David began his military service as a Private and retired a Colonel, having served in Armor and Cavalry units throughout his career stateside as well as abroad, including deployments to Desert Storm in 1991 and Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004 and 2006. He holds a B.S. in Agricultural Economics from Texas A&M University and an M.S. in Administration from Central Michigan University. David ensures that Rivera Group’s Professional Services customer requirements are met with the highest standard of service delivery.
Mark Nance | Vice President, Information Technology
Mark has more than 20 years of IT leadership experience, with a proven track record of delivering highly complex solutions. Prior to joining Rivera Group, he served as the Vice President of Digital Solutions at Papa John’s USA, where he headed-up the design, development and delivery of their eCommerce platform, which accounted for more than 50% of North American sales. He earned a B.A. in Mathematics from Indiana University. Mark manages all aspects of Rivera Group’s IT organization, including Software Development and Infrastructure.
Steven Schraer | Director, IT Infrastructure
Steven has more than 19 years of Data Center Operations and IT Infrastructure experience. Prior to joining Rivera Group, he served as the Senior Director of Technical, Voice and Data Services at Papa John’s USA, where he managed Papa John’s Corporate and eCommerce IT Infrastructure, Point-of-Sale Hardware, Operating Systems and Network Infrastructure and Corporate Telecommunications. He earned his B.S. in Marketing, with a Minor in Supervision, from Indiana University. Steven leads all aspects of Rivera Group’s IT Infrastructure.
Mike Bass | Director of Logistics/PM HSIB
Mike has over 35 years’ experience as an Army logistician, ranging from the Company through Theater levels. Since retirement in 2001, he has served as a defense contractor with the Combined Arms Support Command (CASCOM), supporting the logistics Concepts and Development process. He’s also served in area/program management and program management and acquisition management support while supporting the Program Executive Office Enterprise Information System (PEO EIS) and Army Enterprise System Integration Program (AESIP). Mike earned a BS in Accounting from St. Augustine’s University and a Masters in General Administration from Central Michigan University. He also earned a graduate certificate from the Army Logistics Management College’s Logistics Executive Development Course (LEDC). Mike is a certified Project Manager with the Project Management Institute.
Robert Murin | Director of Operations
Robert has over 19 years’ experience in Operations, Business and Program Management. Most recently, Robert served as a Senior Management Consultant for Chenega, and has held Senior Management and Director Roles throughout his career, focusing on both Federal and Commercial customers.
Robert earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from Lebanon Valley College, and he also earned an Associate’s Degree in Project Management from The George Washington University School of Business. Additionally, Robert is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP).
Lou Ann Waldrop | Talent Acquisition Director
Lou Ann has more than 10 years of recruiting and talent acquisition consulting experience within diverse industries, including Fortune 500 companies, across many disciplines such as IT, eCommerce and Consulting Services. She’s a proven business partner providing service-oriented solutions for talent acquisition initiatives and holds a Professional Recruiter Certification (PRC). She earned her degree from the University of Kentucky and leads all aspects of Rivera Group’s recruiting and talent acquisition functions.
